SSC CGL Examination Structure and Pattern

The Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (SSC CGL) examination is conducted in four tiers to select candidates for various Group 'B' and 'C' posts. The structure is designed to assess candidates' aptitude, knowledge, and skills comprehensively.

Tier-I: Computer Based Examination (CBE)

  • Mode: Online (Computer Based Test)
  • Type: Objective Multiple Choice Questions
  • Duration: 60 minutes (1 hour)
  • Total Questions: 100
  • Total Marks: 200
  • Negative Marking: 0.50 marks for each wrong answer.
  • Sections:
    • General Intelligence & Reasoning: 25 Questions | 50 Marks
    • General Awareness: 25 Questions | 50 Marks
    • Quantitative Aptitude: 25 Questions | 50 Marks
    • English Comprehension: 25 Questions | 50 Marks
  • Qualifying Nature: Marks obtained in Tier-I are considered for shortlisting candidates for Tier-II and subsequent stages.

Tier-II: Computer Based Examination (CBE)

This tier consists of different papers depending on the post applied for. It includes Quantitative Abilities, English Language and Comprehension, Statistics (for JSO), and General Studies (Finance & Economics for AAO).

Tier-III: Pen and Paper Mode (Descriptive Paper)

This tier assesses candidates' writing skills in English/Hindi, including essays, precis, letter/application writing.

Tier-IV: Computer Proficiency Test/Data Entry Skill Test (wherever applicable)

This tier is qualifying in nature and is conducted for specific posts requiring computer proficiency or data entry skills. Document Verification is also conducted at this stage.

Candidates must qualify in each tier to be considered for final selection. The final merit list is prepared based on the cumulative performance in Tier-I, Tier-II, and Tier-III (and Tier-IV for specific posts).


Step-by-Step Guide to Apply for SSC CGL Examination

Applying for the SSC CGL examination is an online process. Candidates must follow these steps carefully to ensure a successful application:

  1. Visit the Official Website: Go to the official website of the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) at ssc.nic.in.
  2. One-Time Registration (If New User):
    • Click on the 'Register Now' link on the homepage.
    • Provide basic details like Aadhaar Number (optional), Name, Father's Name, Mother's Name, Date of Birth, Education Board, Roll Number, Year of Passing, Gender, Mobile Number, and Email ID.
    • Create a strong password.
    • Verify your mobile number and email ID with OTPs.
    • After successful registration, a Registration Number and Password will be generated and sent to your registered mobile number and email ID.
  3. Login to the Portal:
    • Use your Registration Number and Password to log in to the SSC online application portal.
    • Upon first login, you might be prompted to change your password.
  4. Fill the Application Form:
    • Once logged in, find the 'Combined Graduate Level Examination' section and click on 'Apply'.
    • The application form will appear with pre-filled details from your registration. Verify these details.
    • Fill in additional details such as your preferred examination centers (three choices), category, nationality, educational qualifications, preference for posts (if applicable), etc.
    • Indicate if you are an ex-serviceman, PwBD, or seeking age relaxation.
  5. Upload Documents:
    • Upload your scanned recent passport-size photograph (usually 20 KB to 50 KB, JPEG format). Ensure the photograph is taken without a cap or spectacles, and the date of photo capture is printed on it.
    • Upload your scanned signature (usually 10 KB to 20 KB, JPEG format).
    • Ensure the dimensions and file size meet the specifications mentioned in the official notification.
  6. Preview and Submit:
    • Carefully review all the information entered in the application form. Make sure there are no errors or discrepancies.
    • Click on the 'I Agree' checkbox and then 'Final Submit'.
  7. Pay Application Fee:
    • After submission, proceed to pay the application fee (if applicable). The fee can usually be paid online through BHIM UPI, Net Banking, or by using Visa, Mastercard, Maestro RuPay Credit or Debit cards.
    • Female candidates and candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), and Ex-servicemen (ESM) eligible for reservation are exempted from payment of fee.
  8. Print Application Form:
    • After successful payment, take a printout of your completed application form for your records.
    • It is advisable to keep a copy of the e-receipt of the fee payment as well.
