National Campaign Against Coastal Plastic Pollution Launched
2026-09-30Background: Coastal pollution, particularly from single-use plastics, poses a severe threat to marine life and coral reefs. Current Context: In late September 2026, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change launched the 'Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar' phase-II. This initiative focuses on cleaning 75 major beaches across India's coastline using AI-driven waste segregation technology. Impact: The campaign aims to reduce marine debris by 40% within the next two years. It promotes sustainable tourism and protects the livelihoods of coastal communities dependent on healthy marine ecosystems for fishing and tourism.
