The minimum educational requirement for all applicants is the possession of a degree from a recognized University in India. This degree serves as the baseline qualification for entry into any of the four service groups (A, B, C, or D). Additionally, there is a mandatory language requirement: candidates must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the Bengali language. This requirement is waived only for candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali.

The age limit criteria for the West Bengal Civil Service examination are strictly defined to ensure a fair entry into various service groups. The calculation of the age is based on the 1st of January of the year in which the advertisement is published.

• General Requirements: For most vacancies, the candidate must be at least 21 years old and not more than 36 years of age.
• Group B Specific: Candidates whose age falls between 20 and 21 years as of 1st January of the recruitment year are eligible only for Group B posts.
• Group D Specific: For Group D services, the age limit is set between 21 and 39 years.
• Police Service: For West Bengal Police Service vacancies, the age range is defined as 20 to 36 years.

The selection process for the West Bengal Civil Service (Exe.) is a multi-stage affair designed to filter candidates based on merit, knowledge, and psychological suitability. The process is divided into three distinct phases:

• Prelims: A preliminary screening stage consisting of an objective-type paper worth 200 marks. It is strictly qualifying in nature; performance here determines eligibility for the Main examination but does not count toward the final merit list.
• Mains: The primary evaluation stage consisting of 8 papers (six compulsory and two optional papers), each carrying 200 marks. This is where candidates' subject mastery and analytical depth are tested.
• Interview: The final stage. This carries different weightage depending on the service group: 200 marks for Group A & B, 150 marks for Group C, and 100 marks for Group D.

While the standard age limits are clearly stated in the official notification, specific relaxations are provided for candidates belonging to reserved categories, as per the government norms applicable in the state of West Bengal. These relaxations apply to the upper age limit. Candidates claiming these benefits must possess valid documentation, such as caste certificates issued by the competent authority in West Bengal, to verify their claim during the document verification stage.
