The PM-KISAN scheme has specific exclusion criteria. Institutional landholders, families with constitutional post holders, government employees, income tax payers, and professionals are among those not eligible. Small and marginal farmers and those owning cultivable land (who are not otherwise excluded) are generally eligible.

The PM-KISAN scheme was launched on February 24, 2019, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with retrospective effect from December 1, 2018.

Under the PM-KISAN scheme, eligible farmer families receive an annual financial benefit of Rs. 6,000, paid in three equal installments of Rs. 2,000 each, every four months.
