TNPSC Group 1 Exam – Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission Eligibility Criteria

Updated 2026

To be eligible for the TNPSC Group 1 recruitment, a candidate must hold a bachelor's degree from a university or institution recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) or established under a Central/State Act. The specific requirements include:

  • Basic Qualification: A Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a recognized university.
  • Specific Requirements: While a general graduation is sufficient for many roles, some posts, such as Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes), may specify additional qualifications like a B.L. Degree.
  • Tamil Proficiency: It is mandatory for all candidates to be proficient in the Tamil language, including the ability to speak, read, and write.
  • Institution Recognition: The degree must be earned from an institution recognized under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or an equivalent institution approved by the government.

Candidates are strongly advised to cross-verify the specific educational prerequisites for each of the five posts mentioned in the notification to ensure their credentials match the job description perfectly.

Candidates appearing for the TNPSC Group 1 exam must strictly adhere to the established age criteria. The minimum age for all candidates is 21 years. The maximum age limit, however, is subject to the candidate's category and the specific post applied for.

  • Minimum Age: 21 years for all categories.
  • Maximum Age (General/OC): 34 years.
  • Maximum Age (Reserved Categories including BC, BCM, MBC/DC, SC, SCA, ST): 39 years.
  • Destitute Widows (All Categories): 39 years.
  • Assistant Commissioner (General with B.L. Degree): 35 years.
  • Assistant Commissioner (Reserved Categories with B.L. Degree): 40 years.

The age is generally calculated as of the date specified in the official notification. Candidates belonging to reserved categories are provided age relaxation in accordance with state government rules to ensure inclusive representation.

The selection process for the TNPSC Group 1 service is a highly structured, multi-tier examination designed to test the candidate's intellectual, analytical, and leadership abilities. It consists of the following three stages:

  • Preliminary Examination: This is the initial screening round, which consists of an objective-type paper. It serves as a filter to shortlist candidates for the subsequent stages. Success in the prelims is based on clearing the cut-off marks set by the commission.
  • Main Written Examination: Candidates who successfully qualify in the preliminary stage are invited to take the Main Written Examination. This stage consists of descriptive papers that test the candidate's deep understanding of the syllabus, including history, polity, economy, and science, as well as their writing skills in both English and Tamil.
  • Interview (Oral Test): The final stage is the Interview, where the personality and interpersonal skills of the candidate are evaluated. A panel assesses the candidate’s situational judgment, leadership potential, and suitability for the administrative responsibilities of a Group 1 officer.

The final merit list is prepared by aggregating the marks secured in the Main Written Examination and the Interview. Document verification is conducted after the interview to ensure all eligibility claims are supported by valid, official certificates.

  • BC, BCM, MBC/DC: Upper age limit is relaxed up to 39 years.
  • SC, SCA, ST: Upper age limit is relaxed up to 39 years.
  • Destitute Widows: Upper age limit is relaxed up to 39 years.
  • Assistant Commissioner (Reserved Categories): Upper age limit is relaxed up to 40 years.
  • Ex-Servicemen: Special exemptions and fee benefits apply as per state rules.
  • Note: Candidates must provide valid, government-issued certificates to claim these relaxations during the document verification process.
