Educational Requirements and Certifications

Eligibility for the IBPS Clerk 2026 exam centers on academic qualification, computer literacy, and linguistic ability. The fundamental requirement is a graduation degree in any discipline from a university or institution recognized by the Government of India or the University Grants Commission (UGC). Candidates must have obtained this degree, with their final results officially declared, by August 21, 2026. Proof of this qualification, such as a degree certificate or a marksheet, must be available during the document verification phase.

Beyond the degree, basic computer literacy is mandatory. Candidates must demonstrate this by providing a certificate, diploma, or degree in computer operations or by proving that they have studied Information Technology or Computer Science as a core subject at the school or college level. This requirement is non-negotiable, given the high level of digitization in modern banking operations. Additionally, candidates must possess proficiency in the local language of the state or Union Territory for which they are applying. This entails the ability to read, write, speak, and understand the local language fluently. For those who completed their 10th standard with the local language as a subject, this requirement is automatically fulfilled. For others, a test of linguistic proficiency will be administered. Finally, for Ex-Servicemen, a matriculation or equivalent certificate earned after at least 15 years of military service is considered sufficient for eligibility.

Age Limit Criteria

For the 2026 recruitment, the age limit is set between 20 and 28 years as of August 1, 2026. This implies that candidates must have been born between August 2, 1997, and August 1, 2005, inclusive of both dates. This requirement ensures a fresh talent pipeline into the banking sector. The age criteria are strictly enforced based on the candidate's date of birth as mentioned in their 10th-standard passing certificate. Any candidate failing to meet these boundaries by a single day will be ineligible for the process. This rigorous age limit standard helps in maintaining a uniform demographic of entrants who are at the start of their professional careers, allowing them ample time for training and long-term service within the banking institutions. Candidates from reserved categories, however, are granted specific relaxations to ensure inclusivity and equal opportunity as per government mandates.

Stages of the Selection Process

The selection process for the IBPS Clerk position is structured to be objective and transparent, ensuring the most qualified candidates are appointed. The selection consists of three key stages:

• Preliminary Examination: This acts as an initial filter and qualifying round. It tests candidates on their speed and basics. Candidates must clear the cutoff marks in each section, as well as the aggregate, to move forward.
• Main Examination: This is the most crucial phase of the selection process. It is a more in-depth exam, and 100% weightage is given to these scores for final candidate ranking and allotment.
• Language Proficiency Test (LPT): This is an additional test conducted only for candidates who do not possess proof of having studied the local language in their 10th standard. Candidates who do not qualify for the LPT are not considered for final appointment.

Notably, there is no interview round for this post. Final selection depends entirely on the merit list derived from the Main Examination and the subsequent verification of documents. Upon successful qualification, candidates are provisionally allotted to one of the 11 participating public sector banks based on vacancies available in their selected state and their relative performance.

Category-Wise Age Relaxation

The IBPS provides upper age limit concessions for candidates belonging to various reserved categories. The specific relaxation periods are as follows:

• Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe: 5 years relaxation.
• Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years relaxation.
• Persons With Disabilities (PwD): 10 years relaxation.
• Ex-Servicemen / Disabled Ex-Servicemen: Actual service duration plus 3 years, with an upper limit of 50 years.
• Widows, Divorced Women, or Separated Women (not remarried): Up to 35 years for General, 38 years for OBC, and 40 years for SC/ST candidates.
• Persons affected by 1984 riots: 5 years relaxation.

Candidates must produce valid certificates from competent authorities to avail of these benefits during the document verification stage of the recruitment process.
