The PM-KISAN scheme has several exclusion categories, including institutional landholders, farmer families whose members hold constitutional posts, former and present Ministers/State Ministers, MPs/MLAs/MLCs, Mayors/District Panchayat Chairpersons, and all serving or retired officers and employees of Central/State Government Ministries/Offices/Departments and their field units, Central or State PSEs and Attached autonomous Institutions under Government as well as regular employees of the Local Bodies (excluding Multi Tasking Staff / Class IV / Group D employees). Also, all superannuated/retired pensioners whose monthly pension is ₹10,000/- or more (Excluding Multi Tasking Staff / Class IV/Group D employees) are excluded. Professionals like Doctors, Engineers, Lawyers, Chartered Accountants, and Architects registered with professional bodies and carrying out profession by undertaking practice are also excluded.

Under the PM-KISAN scheme, eligible farmer families receive ₹6,000 per year, paid in three equal installments of ₹2,000 each, every four months.

The PM-KISAN scheme was officially launched on February 24, 2019, from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. However, it was implemented with retrospective effect from December 1, 2018, for the first installment.
