WB TET (West Bengal Teacher Eligibility Test) Eligibility Criteria

For Primary Teachers (Classes I to V)
Candidates must possess a Senior Secondary (or equivalent) certificate with at least 50% marks, combined with a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education. A 5% relaxation in these marks is provided for reserved category candidates (i.e., 45% marks).
For Upper Primary Teachers (Classes VI to VIII)
- Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.Sc.) or equivalent.
- Possession of a B.Ed. or a relevant secondary education degree with at least 50% marks is mandatory.
- Candidates who have completed a 4-year Bachelor in Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) are also eligible.
- Those currently in their final two years of a B.Sc., B.A., or Diploma in Education are eligible to apply, provided they meet the minimum mark requirements, such as the 45% threshold for specific categories.
The official guidelines specify that age limits for the exam are determined in accordance with the regulations set by the state authorities at the time of the recruitment notification. Candidates are required to meet the age criteria as stipulated in the official notification released by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education for the specific academic year. It is imperative to check the official notification for the exact age cut-off date, as this can vary between recruitment cycles.
The selection process for the WB TET is designed to ensure that only the most capable candidates are inducted into the teaching profession. It consists of four distinct stages:
1. Written Examination
This is the initial qualifying round, consisting of 150 objective-type questions covering Child Development, Pedagogy, Languages, Mathematics, and Environmental Studies. It filters candidates based on their core knowledge and understanding of the curriculum.
2. Evaluation of Academic Credentials
Post-examination, the board reviews the academic history of the candidates. Weightage is given to higher education levels and relevant teaching certifications, ensuring a high standard of professional preparation.
3. Personality Test
Candidates are assessed on their communication skills, general confidence, and the ability to interact effectively. This stage evaluates if the candidate possesses the leadership and behavioral traits required for a classroom environment.
4. Teaching Demonstration
The final and most practical stage, where candidates are observed in a simulated teaching environment. This allows the panel to assess the candidate's actual delivery style, classroom management, and ability to explain complex concepts to students.
- General Relaxation Rules: The state board typically provides age relaxation to candidates belonging to reserved categories, such as SC, ST, and OBC, as per the prevailing government norms in West Bengal.
- Specific Category Benefits: Candidates should refer to the latest official notification, as it contains the precise number of years of relaxation granted to different categories, including women, persons with disabilities, and ex-servicemen, where applicable.
- Verification: Proof of category (such as caste certificates) must be valid and issued by the competent authority to claim these benefits during the document verification stage of the selection process.
