Educational qualification requirements for the OSSTET are clearly categorized based on the paper the candidate wishes to take. These standards are strictly enforced to maintain the quality of secondary education in Odisha.

• For OSSTET Paper I (Trained Graduate Teachers): Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Additionally, they must have completed a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or an equivalent professional degree in education. This paper is targeted toward those who will be teaching subjects such as Science, Arts, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, or Telugu.
• For OSSTET Paper II (Physical Education Teachers): The minimum requirement for this category is a 12th-grade pass certificate from a recognized board. Furthermore, the candidate must hold a professional qualification in physical education, such as a C.P.Ed. (Certificate in Physical Education), D.P.Ed. (Diploma in Physical Education), B.P.Ed. (Bachelor of Physical Education), or M.P.Ed. (Master of Physical Education) from a recognized university or board.
• Language Requirement: Beyond the academic degrees, every candidate must demonstrate proficiency in the Odia language. This includes the ability to read, write, and speak Odia effectively, as it is the primary medium of instruction in the majority of secondary schools in the state.

Candidates must ensure that their degrees are obtained from board or university bodies that are recognized by the appropriate statutory authorities in India.

The selection process for individuals seeking to become secondary school teachers in Odisha involves qualifying for the OSSTET as the mandatory initial step. This test acts as a screening mechanism to ensure that all teachers entering the state system possess a standardized level of subject knowledge and pedagogical skill.

• Written Examination: Candidates must appear for the written test corresponding to their paper choice. To qualify, candidates need to score a minimum of 60% in the examination. For those belonging to reserved categories such as SC, ST, PH, and SEBC, the qualifying requirement is reduced to 50%.

• Employment Recruitment: Simply holding the OSSTET Pass Certificate does not secure a job.
