APSET – Andhra Pradesh State Eligibility Test for Assistant Professor Eligibility Criteria
Updated 2026To qualify for the APSET 2026, candidates must meet rigorous educational standards that ensure subject mastery. The requirements are as follows:
- Master's Degree: Candidates must hold a Master’s degree or an equivalent degree from a recognized university.
- Minimum Marks: A minimum of 55% marks (without rounding off) is required for general category candidates. For candidates belonging to BC, SC, ST, and PWD categories, a minimum of 50% marks is required.
- Final Year Students: Students currently enrolled in the final year of their Master's program are eligible to apply. However, they must complete their degree with the requisite percentage of marks within two years from the date of the APSET result to remain eligible.
- Ph.D. Relaxation: Candidates who have completed their Ph.D. degree and whose Master’s level examination was completed by 19th September 1991 are eligible for a 5% relaxation in marks, bringing their minimum requirement to 50%.
- Equivalency: Candidates with degrees obtained from foreign universities must ensure that their qualifications are verified and deemed equivalent by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
It is mandatory for candidates to appear in the subject that corresponds to their postgraduate qualification. In cases where their specific subject is not listed, candidates are advised to choose a subject closely related to their postgraduate discipline.
A notable feature of the APSET is that there is no upper age limit for candidates wishing to apply for the examination. This inclusive policy allows professionals and students from various age groups to pursue a career in higher education as Assistant Professors or Lecturers. The primary focus for eligibility is based on academic qualification rather than age, ensuring that the best teaching talent is available to the state's academic institutions regardless of when they choose to embark on this professional journey.
The selection process for APSET 2026 is a straightforward two-stage procedure designed to identify and verify the credentials of qualified teaching professionals.
- Stage 1: Written Examination: This is the most critical component. It consists of two separate papers (Paper-I and Paper-II). Paper-I is a general paper focused on teaching and research aptitude, while Paper-II is specific to the candidate's chosen subject. The examination is conducted in an online mode and accounts for a total of 300 marks. Candidates must achieve the cut-off marks specified by the board to successfully qualify for this stage.
- Stage 2: Document Verification: Candidates who achieve the qualifying marks in the written examination are invited for document verification. During this process, officials examine the candidate's original documentation, including educational certificates, mark sheets (covering all semesters of the PG course), and category-related certificates (Caste/EWS). This stage is mandatory for finalizing the eligibility status.
Only those who successfully clear both stages are recognized as eligible for the roles of Assistant Professor or Lecturer.
Given that the APSET has no upper age limit for any applicant, specific age relaxation policies (which are common in recruitment exams with age caps) are not applicable. All candidates, regardless of their background or category, are treated uniformly in this regard, provided they meet the essential educational criteria and subject-specific requirements set forth by the conducting university.
