UPSC EPFO Exam Eligibility Criteria

Updated 2026

The primary qualification for the UPSC EPFO recruitment is a Bachelor's Degree in any discipline from a recognized university. While this is the mandatory threshold for all applicants, certain qualifications are considered 'desirable' and may provide candidates with a competitive edge during the final stages of the selection process.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in administration, accounts, or legal matters in a listed government or private entity.
  • Bachelor’s or Integrated five-year degree in Law.
  • Masters in Business Administration (MBA) or Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM).
  • Professional certifications such as Company Secretary (CS), Chartered Accountant (CA), or Cost and Management Accountant (CMA).

Note: The UPSC retains the discretion to relax the experience requirement for SC/ST candidates if the number of qualified applicants is insufficient to fill the reserved vacancies.

The age criteria for the UPSC EPFO examination are strictly enforced and vary depending on the specific post applied for. These limits are calculated as of the date specified in the official notification.

  • For Enforcement Officer/Accounts Officer (EO/AO): The maximum age limit is 30 years.
  • For Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner (APFC): The maximum age limit is 35 years.

Candidates must ensure they fall within these brackets at the time of their application, keeping in mind the standard relaxations provided for specific categories.

The selection process for the UPSC EPFO recruitment is a rigorous two-stage method aimed at filtering candidates based on their technical knowledge, analytical skills, and overall personality suitability.

Stage 1: Combined Recruitment Test (CRT) – This is an objective-type, multiple-choice, offline examination. The test carries a total of 300 marks and is conducted over a duration of 120 minutes. It serves to test knowledge across core subjects including English, Indian Polity, Labour Laws, and Accounting. The CRT contributes 75% to the final merit score. A negative marking of 1/3rd of the marks per wrong answer is applicable.

Stage 2: Interview/Personality Test – Candidates who clear the threshold marks in the CRT are invited to the final interview stage. This stage is worth 100 marks and accounts for 25% of the final merit list. The interview panel assesses the candidate’s communication skills, depth of understanding regarding social security in India, and their practical application of labour laws. Minimum qualifying marks (50 for UR/EWS, 45 for OBC, and 40 for SC/ST/PwBD) must be met to be considered for final selection.

  • SC/ST: 5 years
  • OBC: 3 years
  • EPFO Employees: 5 years
  • Ex-servicemen & Commissioned Officers (including ECOs/SSCOs): 5 years
  • Central/UT Government Servants: 5 years
  • PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disabilities): 10 years
