NTPC Diploma Trainee Eligibility Criteria
Updated 2026To be eligible for the Diploma Trainee role, candidates must possess a full-time regular Diploma in their respective engineering disciplines from a recognized institute. The requirement for minimum aggregate marks is generally set at 70%, with certain relaxations provided for specific categories like Land Oustees, for whom the requirement is 50%. For SC/ST and PwBD candidates, the minimum passing marks are typically considered sufficient for eligibility.
Specific Discipline Requirements
- Mining: Full-time regular Diploma in Mining, Mining & Mine Surveying Engineering.
- Electrical: Full-time regular Diploma in Electrical, Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
- Mechanical: Full-time regular Diploma in Mechanical or Production Engineering.
- Mine Survey: Full-time regular Diploma in Mine Survey, Mining Engineering, or Mining & Mine Surveying.
Candidates must hold these degrees from a recognized university or board. The 70% benchmark is a significant threshold, and applicants are advised to calculate their aggregate percentage based on the rules specified by their educational institution prior to filling out the application form.
The age limit is a critical component of the eligibility criteria. For the Diploma Trainee position, the upper age limit is set at 25 years. This age calculation is determined based on the last date of the application window. Candidates must be mindful that any candidate exceeding this age limit, unless they qualify for relaxation, will not be considered eligible for the role. For specific categories such as Land Oustees, the upper age limit is extended to 35 years. It is highly recommended that candidates verify their exact age as of the specified cut-off date before proceeding with their application to ensure their profile matches the requirements set forth by the governing body.
The selection process is a multi-stage approach aimed at identifying candidates with strong technical aptitude and foundational knowledge. The process consists of two primary stages:
Stage I: Online Aptitude Test
The first stage is designed to assess the general competency of applicants. It consists of an objective-type paper covering:
- General English
- Quantitative Aptitude
- Reasoning
Stage II: Technical Discipline Test
Shortlisted candidates (at a ratio of 1:10) from Stage I proceed to the second stage. This test is focused on the candidate's specific discipline (e.g., Electrical, Mechanical, Mining). The final merit list is prepared based on the performance in this stage. Successful candidates are then called for document verification and a medical examination to confirm their fitness for the role.
