Selection Stages

The selection process for the West Bengal Civil Service consists of three distinct stages. The first stage is the Preliminary Examination, which is an objective-type screening test designed to shortlist candidates for the next level.

The second stage is the Main Examination, which includes both objective and conventional type papers. Candidates who qualify in the Mains are then invited for the final stage, which is the Personality Test or Interview.

The final merit list is prepared based on the combined marks obtained in the Main Examination and the Personality Test. The Preliminary exam marks are not counted towards the final ranking.

Prelims Pattern

The Preliminary Examination consists of 200 objective-type questions. Each question carries 1 mark. There is a negative marking of 0.33 marks for every incorrect answer. The total duration of the exam is 2.5 hours.
